Wrong Spray, Girly

Hairspray: defined by dictionary.com as a liquid in a spray container for holding hair in place.

Pepper Spray: defined by dictionary.com as a defense spray agent derived from hot cayenne peppers, which causes temporary blindness and breathing difficulty.

Quick question for ya, how do these two things relate? Have you ever used either one of these, or even better, both? Do you think their containers are similarly shaped? Are their labels similar? Do they achieve the same purpose? Last question: Do you think it’s possible to get these two sprays confused?

Today our high school hosted State Speech Competition, which is the second round of competitive acting. Now I know a lot of strange things occur at speech competitions- it just makes sense, some of the people that compete are quite… colorful, if you will. Let me give you an example: It’s not every day that someone walks around with a giant sign that reads “free hugs,” but what’s even more rare is when multiple people have “free hug” signs. They all just hug differently- those involved in mime hug you without saying anything, those in improv hug you with forced enthusiasm, etc. And to be completely honest, that was one of the “normal” examples.

Here’s another one for ya: Just as we were nearing the end of the day, someone in the gym went to spray hairspray in her hair, but somehow mistakenly grabbed a can of pepper spray and decided to use that instead. Yes, my friends, you read correctly. She sprayed pepper spray in her hair. I don’t know how she missed the label, I don’t know if someone did it to her as a joke or something, but it’s gross. I didn’t realize what had happened until I went to help clean up around her area and BAM. Wall of nasty hits your face, your stomach churns, your nose crinkles, your eyes start tearing up, and that’s when you hold your breath and run away.

Note to self: Don’t ever spray pepper spray unless it is intended to repel. Trust me when I say this, pepper spray shouldn’t be messed with. If you are doing your hair somewhere in public, watch out that you are using the right kind of spray for your hair. (Or just use common sense).

The Bachelor

Don’t get me wrong, I love reality television. I love watching other people live their lives- it gives me insight as to how my life would turn out if my name was Kate, I married a man named John and we had eight kids, or if I partied all night like the kids on Jersey Shore, or even dated 25 different guys on the bachelorette. I just think that there should be a limit to what these people do on reality television.

I guess I’m mainly opening up a discussion about The Bachelor. As I’m sitting here writing this blog post, last Monday’s episode is playing in the background as I feverishly try to absorb every little detail of what I missed on Monday.

Personally, I love watching all the tears these women shed over one guy. Occasionally the girls go on group dates with the guy and they each get to talk to him and basically try to tell them why they are better than all the other girls. This is the third week of The Bachelor and already more than half the girls are telling the guy that he is perfect and he is their future husband and all this other crap.

                It’s baloney.

These people aren’t really on this show to find true love; these people are on this show for the drama, not to mention they’re getting paid to be there. It’s pathetic, really. I mean think about it, all these girls have to do is say a few sappy romantic lines, share a couple of smooches with a hot guy, and shed a few tears on camera and BAM. Instant popularity and money.

To me, these women are simply attention seeking whores. Yeah, I said it. The guy always sets up these crazy amazing dates, and the girl always goes along with it and acts like she loves it. Guess what… She probably doesn’t. As I’m writing this, the Bachelor is taking one of the girls to Six Flags- and while he is wearing comfortable, amusement park clothing, his date is wearing a dress and strappy heels. Really? I’m telling you: Attention. Seeking. Whores.

And it’s not just a couple of the women who act like this- the vast majority of them do. Not to mention how much they talk about their love for the guy. I’m sorry but no. It’s really pathetic, and annoying. But I’m still going to watch it… I mean it’s still entertaining, no matter how pathetic it is.

Rough Start

I don’t think many guys have this problem, but girls certainly do. And that’s not me being sexist, that’s me stating a fact of society. Girls generally have longer hair, while guys prefer shorter hair. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but for the sake of this blog post we are just going to ignore them. This post is solely dedicated to bad hair days- actually it’s not just bad hair days in general; it’s bad hair days on Mondays.
For those of you unfamiliar with my witty sounding yet horribly true Monday posts, my Monday experiences never turn out well. Today was no exception (surprise surprise), but I would have to admit that the best part (and by best I mean worst) of my day all started this morning. It started when the snooze button went off… for the fifth time. I’m not a morning person, or a Monday person, and if you’re anything like me you can imagine how awful my Monday mornings usually are. So there I am, trying to mentally motivate myself to roll out of bed and start my Monday. I then thought to myself that I was disciplined enough to leave the light off and not hit the snooze button again, and that I would be able to lay there for just a few extra minutes without falling asleep.
Apparently I’m not disciplined enough.
Have any of you ever done that? Have any of your moms come running into your room ten minutes before you were supposed to leave for school, all the while yelling at you for not already being up? If you’re like me, it was no problem to change into clean clothes and brush your teeth, but just wait until you look in a mirror.
Big mistake.
My hair looked absolutely awful-I mean really, I had major bed head. I quickly put my hair up in a messy bun (great idea for anyone who is running late, by the way), but of course the hair tie had to break. Now my hair is in a braid, a very frizzy one I might add (also a great way to style your hair when running late).
My advice to you if you end up running late: try a quick updo that looks cute but doesn’t scream “I woke up super late this morning.” Maybe pack some cereal into a bag so that you have something to eat for breakfast (it is the most important meal of the day). And finally, pay attention to your alarm every morning- it goes off for a reason.

Motivational Cough Drops

Don’t you just love cold and flu season? I know I do… NOT. I absolutely hate this time of year, when everyone is getting sick and passing germs to each other. It’s gross, and disgusting, and I hate it.

Being a volunteer at St. Luke’s Emergency Dept, I see it all. I’ve seen some pretty nasty things in my day, but nothing is more disturbing than when a mother brings in her child with a little tiny cough and is freaking out about it. Your child has a cold. You can go buy some cough drops and deal with it. There’s not a whole lot else we can do for you here, ma’am.

I also hate the sound of people sniffling and blowing their nose. If I’m in the middle of taking a test, I should be able to concentrate. But no. Instead I am sitting there, completely irritated, because I can’t finish reading one question without someone in the background *sniff* *cough, cough*. By the way, if you really need to blow your nose, please do it in a respectful and quiet manner. For example: If you are incapable of blowing your nose quietly, take yourself and the box of tissues, and make your way into the hallway- as far away from me as possible. If you are so sick that you must start trumpeting like an elephant to get rid of all your snot, than you probably shouldn’t even be at school in the first place.

Last but not least: If you are sick, do NOT make out with your boyfriend. The whole point of “not spreading germs” is to, I don’t know, NOT spread germs. Shoving your tongue down someone else’s throat is just going to make the whole situation worse. P.S. to whoever the couple is that loves to slurp each other in front of my locker: I don’t like you.

I would like to point out that I am currently sick right now. Thanks to whoever it was that gave me this excellent cold- really you gave me a good one. The whole stuffy nose, cough thing- priceless. Oh and then you even managed to sneak in the whole “losing your voice after a week of sickness” thing. Really appreciated that one. I guess the only good thing about being sick is that I have an excuse to read those Halls cough drop motivational wrappers; they make me think like I’ve got my life together, even when I feel like crap because of you sick people.

Should AP be Promoted So Much?

Take AP! Take AP! Take AP!

Sound familiar? If you are not familiar with the phrase, it comes from our principal, Dr. W. AP courses are college level classes for high school students to take. As the end of registration week nears, Dr. W is pushing AP courses even more so than usual, trying to get us to sign up for a bunch of hard ass classes we will probably either a) fail or b) drop out of.

Why take AP? Some say that AP courses help you in college, others say they are completely useless. I think that AP courses can help you with college- but that doesn’t mean they necessarily will help you. For example: I want to become a physician’s assistant in pediatric cardiology, and taking AP Biology and AP Chemistry might actually help me; but AP Art History probably won’t help me out with where I want to go with my college experience.

Last year I was only in one AP course, but I felt that I was challenged plenty. This year I am taking three, yet my teachers are still telling me to take even more AP courses next year as a senior. It’s as if they have been brainwashed by Dr. W and her AP proposals. I mean really though, you can’t expect us to be AP scholars, be athletes, participate in clubs, be active in the performing arts- all at the same time. As an individual, I feel completely overwhelmed by the pressure that is put on me to excel in everything I do, and to take multiple AP classes at the same time. The stress of high school alone is enough to drive any student crazy- now add three college level classes on top of the mountain of homework I already have and BAM. Instantly no time, no social life, nothing but AP.

Is it good that Dr. W pushes AP so much? I personally think she overdoes the whole thing- hosting all school assemblies to recognize AP scholars, mentioning AP at every freaking possible moment she can. I just think that if she turned it down a notch she could still promote AP without making students feel as if they are forced into choosing an AP course over a regular curriculum course.

Disney Princesses- Too Provocative?

Growing up, the Disney princesses were my absolute favorite role models. I always wanted to dress up like them, live in castles like them, meet a prince just like they did. When I was younger, I never noticed the clothes the princesses were wearing, never questioned why they were wearing something so revealing. Now that I’m older, I can clearly see what I failed to notice in my single-digit years. But the real question isn’t why the princesses dressed the way they did- it’s how their outfits have changed over time.

One of the websites I found that discussed the evolution of Disney princess’ clothing stated that over the years, there has been a “formula” for the Disney princess movies. The “formula” was that the main character was a female who could not or did not stand up for herself and relied on an outside source to assist her in finding her happily ever after (ex. Cinderella needed her fairy godmother).

As time went on, the formula changed ever so slightly. Disney princesses relied less on outside sources and more on ancestral traditions. Then Pocahontas and Mulan were released, and a whole new perspective on princesses came about- no longer was the princess waiting around for someone to rescue her, now she was the one taking action. I really liked this twist to the princess stories- these movies aren’t about finding happy ever after by just sitting around doing nothing. These movies suddenly showed children that there was something worth fighting for, and hard work and determination would get you where you wanted to go.

Last but not least, The Princess and the Frog. With this movie, Disney found a way to keep the kind hearted spirit of their very first princess movies mixed with the strong girl power of their more recent movies. Personally, I really liked the princesses before, but just because those movies are considered classics does not make them more appropriate for children to watch. Think about it- in Tangled and The Princess and the Frog, did the lead female role wear provocative clothing? Was her whole purpose in the movie devoted to finding a man? Was she fairly independent or did she rely heavily on an outside source to motivate her through her life? I think the more recent movies have better messages to give to young children; they create a more realistic view of society’s relationships between one another. Women don’t need to sit around waiting for a man to rescue them- we are able to get off our butts and do something with our lives, something the old Disney princess movies didn’t show before.

Why Even Bother With An Extra Day?

Three day weekends used to be so amazing- the thrill of one more adventurous day, that feeling of euphoria after sleeping in one more day, an extra day to not eat school lunch. And then you grow up, and you start taking harder and harder courses, you get a job, you start paying bills. Your schedule fills up quickly with things you need to do, or have to do- but very rarely is your schedule filled with wants and desires. Somehow amongst all this chaos growing up brings, you are expected to do your homework, make it to work on time, memorize scripts for plays, musicals, and the like. Yet on three day weekends those of us who have zero free time, who would love to just lay around and do nothing all day long- we finally get the chance to catch up on sleep and talk to our friends. At least, that’s what we try to tell ourselves will happen on our extra day off. The reality of the situation: that third day is even busier than all of the other days of the week.

I find it interesting that teachers assume that because we have no school on Monday, we should have time to do extra homework. I mean really, it’s quite convenient for them- it opens up time in class for even more work, and pushes the rest of the day’s assignments to the weekend. Just in case any teachers happen to read this, an extra day off of school should be spent, I don’t know, AWAY from school or school-like activities. Just because we have an extra day does NOT in any way mean we have an extra day to do homework. That’s not how this works, teachers. For some of us, we work on that Monday. Some of us have family visiting on that Monday. Some of us have rehearsals; others of us have plans with friends.

I personally have a ton of homework this three day weekend- and believe it or not I actually have less time than I usually do on weekends to get all this homework done. Why didn’t I do it Friday night, you might ask. I was at school all day, then speech rehearsal, then work- I didn’t get home until 10:30 that night. Saturday? I was up at four in the morning to go to a speech competition, then came home and had to babysit. Sunday afternoon I am able to do homework (just like normal weekends), but I work Sunday night- and then family is coming tomorrow.

Just because we have a three day weekend does NOT mean we have more time for more homework. If anything, teachers should lay off the homework so that we might actually enjoy the fact that we have a three day weekend. Think twice before you assign a bunch of pointless assignments next time, teachers. It would be much appreciated.
